Brief facts about asdic:

ASDIC was the world's first practical underwater active sound detection apparatus, which was used to locate submerged submarines by using electronically transmitted and received sound waves. The apparatus, housed beneath the ship's hull, produced high-frequency beams which bounced back when they hit a submarine. The time before the echo was detected indicated the distance to the submarine. The echo's pitch enabled the operator to tell if the target was approaching or moving away. In 1916, the Canadian physicist Robert William Boyle took on the active sound detection project with A. B. Wood, producing a prototype for testing in mid-1917. This work was undertaken in utmost secrecy, and used quartz piezoelectric crystals.
